WHY?

Hi! I am the Architect. I am curious. I like to know what other people are doing, and I ask a lot of questions. As a kid, I was always asking my parents and teachers, Why? Why? Why? My favorite classes in school were art, history, and reading.

I am also creative and I love to draw. I see pictures in my imagination and then draw them on paper so other people can see them too.

WHAT I DO

As the Architect, I imagine the building before it is built. I decide how the building will look and how it will feel to be inside it. Then I draw it. My drawings tell the builders what to build. I tell them where to put the doors, walls, and windows. I see an image of the building in my head and turn it into drawings that can be built.

Engineer

EXPLORE

LEGO TIME

Hello. I am the Engineer. I like solving problems and seeing how things fit together. My favorite classes in school were music, math, and computers. I was a practical kid. I liked things to work and make sense. I played with puzzles, Legos, K’Nex and GoldieBlox. I like baking too. It is fun to measure out ingredients, mix them together, and create something delicious.

If you see me on the jobsite, you might hear me singing or beatboxing to myself. I love taking individual sounds and combining them to make my own music.

WHAT I DO

As the Engineer, it is my job to understand all the parts of the school, how they fit together, and how they fit in the building. For example, I make sure the building is strong, even in an earthquake. I look at all the small details of the building to give students a school that is comfortable and works well.

Virtual Construction Coordinator

EXPLORE

ARE YOU A GAMER?

Hi there. I am the Virtual Construction Coordinator. I was a gamer when I was your age. My favorite class in school was computers, but I also liked science, math, and crafts. After finishing my homework, my parents would let me play video games. This was my favorite part of the day!

I am interested in drones, 3D printers, everything electronic. I remember the first time I flew a drone. It was so much fun. Now I get to fly drones for my job!

WHAT I DO

As the Virtual Construction Coordinator, I test the project in virtual reality before we start building it in real life. I build the school virtually to make sure everything will work. I use technology to make the project go smoothly.

TEAM PLAYER

Hello. I am the Project Manager! I am a team player. Soccer and basketball were my favorite sports as a kid. I paid attention to details, so I was good at knowing who was open and where to pass the ball. On a team, everyone is important. I was the kind of kid who got along with everybody. I love making friends. I also like to volunteer in my community, because it gives me the opportunity to meet new people. My favorite classes in elementary school were science, social studies, and foreign languages.

WHAT I DO

As the Project Manager, I am like the team captain. I get the team together when we are ready to start building. I make sure everyone understands their role. Then my team takes the drawings from the Architect and Engineer and turns them into real-life buildings like your school! If my team finds a problem, I help them solve it.

Safety Officer

EXPLORE

I LOVE RULES

Hello! I am the Safety Officer. When I was your age, my favorite classes in school were science, social studies, and recess. At recess I liked helping the younger kids go down the slide and swing on the swings. I love camping and playing sports, and now that I am older, I like coaching sports too! I care a lot about other people.

WHAT I DO

As a Safety Officer, I create a safe work environment. Rules are important to me because they keep people safe. We use a lot of heavy machinery like dump trucks and bulldozers on the construction site, so we have to be very careful. It is my job to prevent dangerous situations before they happen! I always plan ahead. I also pay close attention to details and follow the rules to make sure no one gets hurt.

Would you like to visit my construction site someday? Remember, always wear your hardhat!

Operator

EXPLORE

ALWAYS MOVING

Hello. I am the Operator. I had a lot of energy as a kid. From the day I learned to walk, I was always on the move. My parents could not keep up with me! Exploring, climbing, running, jumping, digging in the dirt – that is what I liked to do. In school I liked science experiments, PE, and recess. I like having fun.

WHAT I DO

As the Operator, I drive big trucks, excavators, and bulldozers. I use these machines to move big amounts of dirt and make sure the ground underneath the building is flat before construction starts. Can you imagine if the floor of your school was bumpy, or if walking through the hallway was like walking up a hill?

I also operate the cranes. Cranes are really tall machines. They remind me of dinosaurs because of their long necks. We use them to lift large objects up onto the higher floors of the school.

Iron Worker

EXPLORE

DAREDEVIL

Hi! I am the Iron Worker. I am a little bit of a daredevil. I would climb trees with my big brother and take my bike over big jumps. On the playground, I like swinging high. I played sports and I was not afraid to get a little scraped up. My favorite classes in elementary school were art, recess, and reading. When I read stories, I pretend I am the main character, having a big adventure!

WHAT I DO

As the Iron Worker, I work with metal. Did you know that your school has a skeleton just like you do? The building’s skeleton is made of metal instead of bone. Inside the walls of your school, there are steel beams. They start at the floor and go all the way up to the roof. These beams shape and support the building, like your bones do for you.

Sometimes, when we need to cut metal, we use Fire! I use a tool that creates a flame so hot, it cuts through steel like a knife cuts through butter. I wear a face shield and gloves to protect myself. When we have to get heavy pieces of metal up to the top of the building, I attach the metal to the crane, so that my teammate, the Operator, can lift it safely.

Electrician

EXPLORE

POWER UP

Hello. I am the Electrician. Do you like flipping light switches on and off? If you do, then you are just like me when I was a kid. In school, we learned that electricity is in everything, even in our bodies. I remember learning about static electricity by rubbing a balloon on my head. My hair stuck to the balloon and stood straight up! It was pretty funny. I also really like thunderstorms, because I love to watch the lightning flash in the dark sky. My favorite classes in school were math and science.

WHAT I DO

As the Electrician, I make sure the electricity in the building flows where it needs to go, so that all the lights and electronics work. I install wires and switches. The wires are like roads for electricity. They help electricity travel from one place to another. I am always very careful when I work. Electricity is powerful and it should be respected!

Carpenter

EXPLORE

NAILED IT!

Hello. I am the Carpenter. Have you ever glued popsicle sticks together for arts and crafts? If you have, then you are a Carpenter already! Once when I was a kid, I helped my grandparents build a chair. We cut wood with a saw. Then we hammered in nails to hold the pieces together. I am strong, and I like to work with my hands. When something breaks, I do not throw it away – I fix it! I also love trees because that is where wood comes from. In school, I liked Art, Science, and Math.

WHAT I DO

As the Carpenter, I build the wooden parts of the building. Look around you. Can you find the wooden parts of your school? Wood is everywhere. It is on windows, doors, furniture, and sometimes the floor. There is a lot of wood you cannot see too, like inside the walls, under the floors, and in the ceiling! Wood is very useful. That is why I love it.

Painter

EXPLORE

COLORFUL

Hello! I am the Painter. I love colors! I have always been a creative person. Even as a little kid, I had my own sense of style. I had strong opinions about what I wanted to wear, and I loved choosing my own outfits. I also helped my parents choose the colors and decorations for my bedroom. In school I loved art, math, and working in the school garden.

WHAT I DO

Now I paint the inside and the outside of buildings. My job is to make the building look nice, so that people can feel good when they use it. I do not know if you have ever seen a building with no paint. Without paint, buildings are grey and boring. I bring life to the building and give it personality!
